The Richest Province I’m
going to spend my $400 on chocolate and cookies! A
community is kept alive by its connections through schools and museums and
libraries and groups, which in turn are kept alive by subsidies and funding made
available through government programs. Community
institutions all depend to some degree on financial assistance to sustain them. This is good use of our tax dollars. In
the last 20 years there has been an increasing concentration of foreign
ownership of Canadian corporations. Alberta
is not immune to this. Our energy
resources, Albertas’ legacy and heritage for the next generation, are the envy
of the world. These new foreign
owned entities also tap into the federal pocketbook for subsidies and
assistance. This is bad use of our
tax dollars. Historically the local youth group could approach an Alberta Corporation to solicit charitable funds when funding was not forthcoming from government coffers. Now even that ability has been jeopardized by the changing ownership of what was once Alberta owned industry. Money flows freely into communities where the CEO’s and decision makers reside. Branch offices are not offering this same investment. It appears that community organizations, once again, will be more dependent on grassroots efforts like the chocolate almond sales and the mint cookies. So, what are you going to do with your $400? (besides pay for escalating heating bills!) |
