Jason Bartziokas

In 2002 Jason was one of seven guest artists in the documentary "Art of the Rockies I".  At that time he was attending the Alberta College of Art and Design.  Many of his airbrush designs, that he was initially know for, found their way onto sport equipment - mountain bikes, boards and hockey helmets.  "I have a goal for myself, I have 6 years before I turn 30.  By then I hope to have a helmet on Hockey Night in Canada."

When we returned to Jason's studio in 2004 he had graduated from ACAD and was looking forward to his future as a full time artist.  This promising young artist is a must see.  Acrylics, airbrush...landscape, graphics, abstracts and figures.  In 2006 Jason's art was the focus of a short documentary created in partnership with the National Film Boards' Filmmakers Assistance Program.  "The Thing About Jason" will be released in early 2007.

This exhibition is sponsored in part by the European Wellness Centre of Calgary.

In Calgary Jason is represented by the SKEW Gallery.

In Banff Jason is represented by the SUMMIT Gallery.

"A 2004 graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Bartziokas's new body of work mixes 16th-century European aesthetics with contemporary notions of painting creating work that is innovative yet firmly rooted in historical traditions.  Bartziokas is representative of a young generation of artists looking back at its roots with compelling results.

Influenced by artists like the Italian Renaissance painter Caravaggio, Bartziokas's new body of work captures the atmospheric, haunting quality of these masterpieces while still introducing a contemporary approach to painting.  Bartziokas uses airbrush techniques found in the auto body customizing industry to create contemporary figurative works that use steel as a support instead of canvas.  These new works deal with issues of isolation and containment while still invoking an almost fragile feeling of intimacy.

Jason Bartziokas was born in Jasper Alberta, but currently lives and works in Calgary.  A 2004 graduate with a BFA (with distinction) from ACAD's Design Painting Department."  SKEW GALLERY, Calgary/ SUMMIT GALLERY, Banff
