CROSS CANADA CALL FOR ARTISTS SUBMISSIONS

In Sept 2007 Jasper National Park will be 100 years old. Renowned the world over for its natural beauty and wild spaces the Park has been a symbol of diversity and an attraction for lovers of nature since 1907. As a result, the Park has also been bestowed with the honour of being part of a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.
Unfortunately this centenary may mark the extinction of a species already at risk in this protected space – the Woodland Caribou. Through the exhibition "Tuktu Prayers" we hope to educate and inspire Canadians to think in new ways about these protected places. These pieces have been chosen for this traveling show and for inclusion in a future publication to further promote species at risk.

These coats were 'the Wardrobe de Rigueur Project' that began in 1996. The coatworks carry messages about the environment. The Edmonton coat you see here celebrates Caribou Mountain region, west of Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Alberta. Designated as a vulnerable species, the future of the caribou in 1996 was threatened by fossil fuel mining developments. This project was a collaboration between Latitude 53, Central High School Edmonton, and artist Marguerite Larmand.
We were amazingly fortunate to find Marguerite and these wonderful coats - 10 years later!!
