Jeff Collins, July 14 and 15 Artist Statement
"The problem with writing an artist statement is that you are using words to describe what you are trying to accomplish with images. I use to share a studio space with a fellow painter who had a quote on his wall that went something like this: 'This is where the languages stops.' I think that sums it up
pretty well. For me, painting is about using the elements of painting – colour,
line, form, composition, paint, subject … - to express an experience or an
emotion that for me is impossible, to express in words.
Painting is a visual way of understanding my relationship to this natural
world." Jeff will be accompanied on his 'Artists on Rails' trek by Dell Collins. ____________________________________________

Thursday in the Columbia Room, and a Plein Air Experience on Friday at the base of Pyramid Mountain - celebrate Alberta Heritage in the Rockies! Visual artist and Instructor Ray Syrja ______________________________________________________ Another great article from the Jasper Booster Artist to share his love of nature at
workshop
Local visual artist and instructor Ray Syrja is preparing to bring his love of art and nature to fellow painters in an upcoming workshop session in Jasper. Artists of all skill levels are offered a chance to learn from this experienced teacher and creator during workshops being offered by the Alberta Centennial project, entitled ‘Dreamers and Doers’. “I try to make my artwork a celebration of nature, of life, physical and spiritual. Jasper National Park is such a wonderful creation, I feel compelled to praise it through re-creation,” said Syrja. As one of three painters chosen for the project, he is pleased to be recognized as an artist outside the community level. “I’m very, very excited about it. I see it as recognition as an Alberta artist.” For 30 years, he’s been experimenting in fine and graphic arts using watercolours, acrylics and computers. Eight of those years he spent as a full-time artist and instructor. Over the years, Syrja has taught courses ranging from watercolour landscapes and figure drawing to heritage buildings and portraits. He is the co-author of two watercolour instruction books and his projects have included fine art shows, billboards, museum displays, restaurant menus, chalk boards and travel displays. Along with fellow Jasper artist Alan Butler, Syrja has developed interesting visual aids for use in his teaching including a spinning colour wheel designed to help students better understand colour. “People who are interested in art are visual so the best way to teach them is through visual aids.” Syrja will be giving a watercolour painting workshop at Pyramid Lake Resort on July 28 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. He will also be conducting workshops on the VIA Rail train July 28 and 30. The Pyramid Lake workshop is $30. All materials are provided and spots are still available. Those interested should register with Ray at (780)852-4160 or raysyrja@hotmail.com or with Marianne Garrah at (780)852-0359. On July 29 there will also be a free Plein Air (outdoors) session on the new barbecue patio at the resort at 2 p.m. If weather permits, Syrja said they may even go to the Pyramid Lake island to paint. According to Syrja, the session will be suitable for all skill levels. The public is also invited to come view Syrja’s work on display at Pyramid Lake Resort during the workshop.
